Josh Rouse at Neumos

April 22, 2006 8:55 am

We went to see Josh Rouse at Neumos last night - what a great time!  First, it’s always fantastic to get out with Anne as “real people” and not just parents, plus Sharon came along. Then, the show was very entertaining. John Roderick of The Long Winters opened up, and not only was it great to hear the tunes acoustic, John is also a very engaging guy on stage.

After a nice set from John, Josh came out with his acoustic guitar, backed by a string quartet (he called them the “Crimson Quartet”, but Anne recognized them from the Seattle Symphony). Josh put on a great show - some new tunes from Subtitulo, and all of the tunes I love from Nashville and his New Year’s Eve 2003 show DVD.

Although he was on stage for just over an hour for his main set, he came out and did a nice encore, including “The Man Who Doesn’t Know How to Smile” as a duet with his girlfriend Paz Suay from Valencia, Spain, where Josh is living these days (and where he wrote Subtitulo in a week after arriving from Nashville).

Here’s a link to a Q&A with Josh with some more info on him. I loved the string quartet backup, and hope that next time he comes through he’ll bring a band.

btw, you can get all of Josh Rouse’s music on eMusic - tell them that I sent you (or tell me first, and I’ll refer you).

ps : John opened with this tune from The Long Winters’ new album. Thank you Anne for giving me the gift of never having to look back and call myself stupid… :)

Baby News and Experiments

April 19, 2006 4:13 pm

Congratulations to my fantastic sister Emily and the family for the birth of my newest niece : Charlotte Michelle Paynich.

When I went over to visit the other day, I mentioned this wacky Japanese video to her, in which much success was had with making babies stop crying by gurgling noises with water. Must experiment… :)

DVRAnywhere (or, how can Orb be so COOL?)

April 14, 2006 1:27 pm

Russell Beattie likes Orb on his ZX10 over Cingular UMTS, but it also works just fine for me on my SMT5600 over Cingular GPRS. It’s amazing (as Russell says), that this just works. I see some technical issues in the Orb forums, but overall it works a treat.

I found Russell’s post reading a post from Marc about new business models (his post covers a bunch of companies and stuff that I’ve been watching or using — good stuff here).

April 9, 2006 7:40 pm

Today we went to Green Lake. Alex and Daddy biked all the way from our house, over Phinney Ridge, to the lake, and met up with Mommy, Leah, Aunt Emily, Sophie, and Audrey at the playground. Even though it was kinda rainy, we still had fun playing on the slides, sandbox, and swings. Leah saw a cute little puppy sleeping - he was soooo fuzzy. Then Alex and Dad played golf in the backyard when we got home. And Leah too. Then we had dinner, and lollipops. Leah got cherry. Alex got green apple - Alex loves green apple because it is SOOOO SOUR!

Yesterday, Alex had his second tee-ball game. It was fun - except it was raining.

Here are the pictures…

Remote Aboriginal Village

March 29, 2006 9:49 am

Wow - I didn’t know that there were “remote aboriginal villages” within a couple hundred miles of where I live. Learn something new every day. Bet those cruise ship folks were glad to see them…

Residents of the remote aboriginal village of Hartley Bay, heard the Queen of the North’s distress call and quickly sent boats to the scene. Victims were given blankets and food as they were brought to shore.

Orb

March 26, 2006 10:56 pm

I’ve been using Orb for about a week, and I am very impressed. It was very easy to install, and a breeze to use to access all my music and photos on my home computer. It will stream me live video off my tv tuner card back to my mobile, and will even let me see my real-time webcam feeds. And best of all…it’s FREE!!! Bwahahahahah!

Want to know more? You can read the Engadget interview with Jim Behrens, CEO of Orb Networks, see what other people are saying, or just try it for yourself. Go ahead.

Songbird

Who wants to legally download free music? Who wants to drink from the firehose? | Songbirdnest.com

“Using Songbird to Subscribe to all of them would put thousands of songs into your download queue right now and, at least, ten or twenty new songs every day.”

I might have to give it a try - I’m pretty happy with foobar2000 as my current music player, but am interested in the web-interface functionality here. I shall report back.

reFeed

March 17, 2006 10:49 am

Good stuff - I managed to get it all installed and running on my server. I found it on Lifehacker.

Basically, this is a web-based RSS reader/manager, with the difference being that I can easily scan through my mountain of feeds/feed items, and tag which ones I’m interested in. That “Published” stream then becomes its own feed. See my feed at http://www.anvl.org/refeed/out/rss.php (go ahead, add it to your reader).

Now, once Feedburner rolls out its feed splicing functionality, I’ll have one feed that supplies my main MT blog feed, my del.icio.us items, my Flickr feed, and my reBlog feed. ONE FEED TO RULE THEM ALL! BWAHAHAH!

(ok, got a little carried away there — Happy St. Patricks’ Day anyway… :)

You are now a T-Ball Dad…

March 15, 2006 11:04 am

I heard those words yesterday from Anne. Apparently, she got a call from the T-Ball coach 15 minutes before practice letting her know that Alex is on the team, and to show up at the field. Wish I could have been there to see, but it sounds like it went really well. Alex hit, caught a ball, and ran to first (not necessarily in that order). Looks like I have a new Saturday afternoon appointment… Looking forward to it.

See Music

I was talking with a guy from Predixis (the company that makes the great MusicMagic Mixer tool), and mentioned to him that I liked MusicPlasma. He sent me to MusicIP and told me to keep my eyes on it. Well, I’m watching. The suspense, the drama! :)
P.S. I found this blurb about what MusicIP is/will be:
